Enigin out of the winter blues

posted by enigin in Uncategorized

Well we are steaming into Spring now but still doesn’t feel like it! We were tricked for a week or so with sunny weather, though still not warm. Now whats happened?!

Though I am pleased to finally start being able to be warm in my own home without having to pay for it. This winter people’s energy usage must have been tremendous. And it is very difficult to know what to do about it.

I have a, now, 8 month old baby so this winter the heat was on! It was difficult to go through winter without it on, but those bills are going to be soaring. We need to find new ways to keep our homes warm and cosy as I can imagine this isn’t going to be last winter like that!

Enigin - DIY home energy audit

posted by enigin in Uncategorized

You may have seen our sister blog energysavingideasblog.co.uk which discusses the suggestion of having a home energy audit. Well why not do-it-yourself.

Keep a checklist of all problems you find around the house - to keep track of them. Firstly, locate for air leaks. When an air leak is detected you can save between 5 and 30% of the total expense within a year and likewise enjoy more comfortable surroundings at home - with no leaking air, or air seeping in! Include in this checking for air leaks along gaps of baseboard, junctures of ceilings and walls, and edge of flooring.

Check such things as the switchplates, electrical outlets, baseboards, window frames, attic hatches, weather stripping around doors, window mounted air conditioners and fireplace dampers - that there is enough air that flows into them. Outside check the corners like the chimney, exterior brick and siding as to whether or not they meet.

A caution though, when you are sealing a home you must be aware of the possible air combustion and pollution that may occur. It would be very dangerous for the health of the household of this were taken for granted.

Look into the insulation - the attic, ceilings and walls must meet the desired amount of insulation levels.

Check out your cooling or heating equipment. It must be checked annually or as directed by the manufacturer.

Or instead of doing it all yourself - hire a home energy auditor  make a list of existing problems in our home in advance and pass the job onto them! The auditor will take charge of all these tests and checks with equipment and techniques you may not have.

So get your energy down and audit your home.

British Gas today announced millions of pounds worth of profit they made in the the last year. In fact it may possibly be billions! So I must ask the question we must all be thinking, Why?

Why are we paying such huge utility bills, still. Have you seen a decrease in your bills? I know I haven’t. It is a battle as it is with these companies to try and pay a little less each month and still have the amount to cover your usage. They want you to up how much you pay.

This is the water bills as well. The other day I rang our water company to decrease our payments as I knew we weren’t using that much. They decided to argue with me! Yes argue with the customer. They gave me a price of how much I am using each month and it was a little less then I was paying, so I requested to bring what I was paying down to match my usage. And they questioned me!

These companies are making millions and billions of pounds off us each year. And yet when we request to pay just £10 less a month, which in my case would then pay my 7 month olds nappies for the month, they question us and argue with us. Asking us why do you want to reduce it, its only £10? Of course to these people it is only £10.

It is ridiculous and I don’t see it improving any time soon. But I can hope.

Enigin - People just aren’t aware

Climate change is right in front of our eyes - or so you would think. We are seeing it constantly and yet - apparently - so many are completely unaware of it.

Think of the winter we have just had! How that is now going to affect us all for the rest of this year. Snow, Ice, more snow. I dread to think what our energy bills are going to be for the last quarter, on top of everything else. There is going to be widespread panic as the year goes on, “What’s the summer going to be like?” and “What’s next winter going to bring?”. What can we do about it?

Well we must be sensible for a start. Yes this winter was madness, no one expected it, no one could have predicted it. Same as this summer, and whatever is to come, and the next winter. But what we can do surely is be aware, that’s really all any of us can do. Be aware that this is happening to the planet, it is climate change. It is affecting everyday life for everybody - but still plenty ignore it or don’t believe it is happening.

But then people are so quick to blame! “Can you believe they didn’t have enough salt! Disgusting!”, “They should have known, they must have known.”, “Surely it was common sense to order triple the amount we have needed in the last 20 years, it was just obvious this winter was going to be the winter.” How ridiculous!

So be aware yourself. We can only try so much. But times are changing, things are happening and things will need to be done. Whether its recognising climate change, becoming energy efficient, becoming energy conscious! There are so many places we can turn, so lets start looking to solutions. They are out there.
